SPC flooring, also known as stone-plastic composite flooring, is a multi-layered structure made through high-temperature hot pressing. Each layer is made of a different material, so the degree of dimensional change varies from layer to layer.
SPC flooring expands and contracts with temperature changes. At room temperature, neither the wear layer nor the substrate changes; however, when heated, the wear layer shrinks, while the substrate doesn't undergo significant dimensional changes.
Under large temperature differences or prolonged high temperatures, excessive shrinkage of the wear layer, coupled with less dimensional change in the substrate, causes the wear layer to shrink inwards, forming a "tile-like" shape-what we commonly call floor warping.
Which types of SPC flooring are prone to warping?
Thin flooring: If the flooring is insufficiently thick, the wear layer shrinks when heated. The thin substrate, often filled with recycled waste, is easily stretched and deformed by the wear layer.
Mixed material flooring: This type of flooring contains various recycled waste materials in its substrate, making it more susceptible to deformation when heated.
Which SPC flooring types are less prone to warping?
For home use, thick, virgin material flooring is recommended: A thickness of 5mm or more is suggested, ideally 6mm with a 2mm IXPE sound-absorbing pad. This type of flooring uses pure, virgin material as its core material, making it relatively thick. When heated, the wear layer shrinks, but the core material itself is difficult to stretch, thus reducing the likelihood of warping.
Besides choosing suitable SPC flooring, pay attention to the following in daily use:
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight: SPC flooring expands and contracts with temperature changes; prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause warping.
Avoid high temperatures: Do not expose the flooring to high temperatures for extended periods. For enclosed balconies, install sheer curtains or blinds, and draw the curtains to cool the area under direct sunlight.
